Prod LX & Programmer:

 Opera Makers

Allocation Action Plan

Section 1: Objectives - What you want to improve on.

What do you want to do, or think that you are supposed to do in this allocation?

Describe your personal objectives and expectations for this allocation, in relation to your current knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques. You are expected to link your objectives to your previous feedback.

I want to improve on my understanding of electrics in general as well as understand why we are using certain fixtures for specific reasons; to then in turn understand the role of a lighting designer better. I want to improve on my programming skills and to become competent at translating the lighting designers’ instructions into the desk. I am expected -as a prod lx – to source the hardware using the lighting designers’ plans, to create a power plan as well as making sure the fixtures are addressed appropriately and are working properly. As well as create any smaller fixtures, whether that be with rewiring birdies to using pixel tape. In my programmer role, to be comfortable with navigate a lighting desk, to support the lighting designer in the tech and dress period, to then be ready to solely operate the show post opening night. to My personal objectives do include understanding design as much as possible whilst in the position of an electrician/programmer; as I hope to have a lighting design role in my third year.

Section 2: Learning & development - Why you want to improve on these things.

Consider what you hope to be doing five years from now – how are the objectives you have set for yourself useful to you in getting there?

I want to improve on these things so for when I am in a head of department role of Prod LX, Assistant Lighting Designer or Lighting Designer in my third year, I can be a better team leader as my understanding for the process will be more well-rounded. By improving on my knowledge of fixtures, in more intimate detail, would be really beneficial in the long run for my career- especially as I am still uncertain of my future still (at least in the next five years). Lighting design and programming is also a big aspect of my graduation project, and I feel like by having this LX allocation right before the summer break before third year, it is perfect timing for me to go straight into developing my project fresh from the allocation.

Section 3: Action Plan - How you are going to improve these things.

What do you plan to do in order to achieve your objectives?

What recommendations or advice have you already been given that you can apply now?

In terms of wanting an Assistant Lighting Design role, I might see if I can assist Finlay Anderson (Lighting Designer) in anything relating to Vectorworks or Lightwright- maybe even capture or CAD. I have the Eos software on my laptop, and I can connect this to capture and get back to familiarising myself with programming again from home. In addition to this, I can watch several ETC videos online as well as come into the university and play around on one of the desks in the control room in the studio. Along the way, making sure to check any rehearsal reports for any Lighting related notes that may involve a practical or hardware element. To also join a zoom call (or attend in person) for the first instances of run throughs at Toynbee, to familiarise myself with the Opera.

Section 4: How you will measure your improvements – what success will look like.

How will you be able to demonstrate that you have achieved your objectives?

I will be able to demonstrate that I have achieved my objectives by supporting the Lighting Designer and Director to tailor to their vision and to reach their expectations. Success will be in seeing all the components of the Opera, whether in an overhead rig, practicals or booms/ladders; all working cohesively for the demands of the peices in this opera. In addition, to have strong communication with all departments of the production whether in production meetings, through emails or in person. Furthermore to recieve good feedback from the designer and director in my feedback form as well as good praises in our end of allocation meeting.

Section 5: Do you have a Learning Support Agreement?

What support do you feel you might need on this allocation and how do you wish this to be discussed with the creative/ freelance team you will be working with?
